On Sunday, January 19th, 2014, at 4:30pm Brooklyn Heights Prenatal will be holding our monthly workshop, "Dancing To Delivery, Pregini Labor Prep", hosted at Area Yoga, 144 Montague Street.
Our November workshop was a complete success, still talked about, and repeat requested!
See our write up on
dnainfo.com
Led by our Prenatal Yoga teacher, and Birth and Post Partum Doula, Julia Arenson (link), we spent 90 to 120 minutes learning and practicing comfort and labor positions that add strength and flexibility to the entire body, especially the hips and pelvis.
Julia draws from her background in Middle Eastern Dance, incorporating easy dance motions to make this a complete holistic experience for mind body and spirit.
The birthing ball is used as an integral part of this workshop. Mats, bolsters, scarves, and balls will all be supplied and you my purchase your birthing ball from us, and take it home if you like.
Registration is limited to 12, so register early, as spaces are already filling up. The cost for this workshop is $35/$50 if you choose to take home your birthing ball. Some "reduction-scholarships" available, inquire if needed.
To register, email Jody at brooklynheightsprenatal@gmail.com

Crazy Or Just Nuts?
One of the top news stories this morning is nuts! For a number of reasons......The new news is that pregnant women can and should eat nuts again. I didn't even know that nuts had been blacklisted.
Nuts are fantastic! They are an invaluable source of iron, calcium, and all the minerals you and your baby need. And they are concentrated, meaning that you do not need to eat volumes, you can consume them in small or medium size snack portions, making them an excellent choice when even a small meal feels difficult to digest.
Apparently nuts were declared fooda non grata when the AMA started studies to explain the spike in peanut and tree nut allergies in children. And the first place to which they pointed their studies was pregnant mothers who consumed nuts during pregnancy. Obviously, these were women who themselves were non-allergic. The new study actually proves just the opposite. That non-allergic women who consumed nuts during pregnancy had children who were less likely to develop peanut and tree nut allergies.
Here are links to articles:
CNN:Study: Eating nuts during pregnancy may reduce baby's allergy risk
CBS: Eating nuts during pregnancy may lower chid's chance of peanut allergy
JAMA: The Study
So between studies, the first with unreliable and scant information, and this new improved more trustworthy study, the warning against nut consumption and a semi-official ban on nuts was promoted by doctors and perpetuated along the pregnant grapevine. So sad. And nuts!
Firstly, How often does the AMA reverse itself? Often. Secondly, these studies take decades to amass clinical evidence, while negative publicity goes out in a second, and the AMA releases hypotheses and the fact that they are conducting a study as though the study has proved itself.....and they do this as news releases. Thirdly, doctors either read or have heard about these unreliable studies and "authoritarianly" spread the advice. And Fourthly, pregnant women who are one of the most vulnerable targets of studies, either as the cause of something or the ultimate preventers of something are held hostage to their desires to do the best for their baby....to the detriment of actual true nutrition.
If you are concerned about any food item. ....if your doctor has said this or that......If another pregnant woman has said, "Well, I heard............."
My advice: Do your own research and make your own self-educated decisions. There is a plethora of resources available to you. You can inform yourself with information, with personal experience, and with instinct. You can synthesize all three and you can have your own path. You also can be respectful of your fellow pregini and not spread heresay as fact, but encourage her own self education and even team up to collect information together.
Disclaimer: Please do not think that I am anti-doctor, or do not trust doctors. Quite the contrary, I say, "Make sure you have a doctor that you can trust, that you like, and that you feel postive about."
Come to our Meet-Up, Thursday, January 9th. The subject will be: "Iron: Preventing Anemia During Pregnancy". Almonds are high on the list!

Why I Like This Book.....

It would be true to say that as women in North America much of our lives is spent in the pursuit of individuality and self expression. Yet, when it comes to pregnancy, labor, and giving birth we would like to fit into a standard predicted process called "normal".
When it comes to birthing the spectrum of normal is wide and varied. Our process is governed by forces both within and beyond our control, and we would like it to be a healthy experience no matter our setting, our choice of comfort management or our own concerns as to what is happening.
So many labor questions are answered with, "Every woman is different".
It is one thing to intellectually nod and hypothetically agree, but you will have quite a different orientation to this statement after reading 131 pages of over 70 birthstories, each account as unique and special as the mother, baby, and family involved.
That is the effect that Part One of Ina May's Guide To Childbirth is having on me. The effect is the replacement of the hope that "my" birthing will be the "easiest", "most natural", "most convenient", "most incredible experience" with the knowledge that I am in for an uncontrollable unique roller coaster ride as individual as I am and as my baby will be.
While my story will be special and unlike any other, like all other moms who have birthed before me, I will cope, understand, and agree to nature's power and will give birth.
Even though these stories are written by women who have given birth on Ina May's Midwifery Farm and involve little "medical" intervention, I believe this shift in understanding that "Every woman is different" can still be achieved for all women giving birth no matter your choice of settings, hospital, birthing center or home. In fact, even more so.
We have come to our own choice of birthplace setting. We have informed ourselves about comfort options, and we have educated ourselves as to the controlable variables.
And now, let the individuality begin!
Please note: Brooklyn Heights Prenatal does not advocate any one style, method or birthsetting, and embraces the beauty of individual choice.

From Our Last Meet-Up, And This Was Only Half The Room
"Comfort During Early Labor" a presentation by Danika Wynn, Childbirth Educator
Last Thursday's Meet-Up saw our biggest group yet, no pun intended. And look! Many partners attended! Danika Wynn delivered an extremely informative presentation. My most impressed takeaways: The 311. When to go to the hospital during a normally progressing labor? When the contractions are three minutes apart, lasting one minute for one hour.

From Our Nov 7th Meet-Up
Laura McKenna, Staff Midwife at Woodhull Hospital condensed 4hours of information into a lively and concise 90 minute presentation on "What To Expect In The Hospital". She discussed routine hospital procedure and what you can opt out of and what you can request. She discussed hospital pain management including epidurals.
We were enthralled, engaged and many intelligent questions were asked and answered. In this moment, we were discussing how to know when you are dilating and how much.
"Is there and app for that?"

Confidence, Confidence, Confidence
Here is a wonderful article with guidance and pointers to boost your confidence during labor and pregnancy.
Webster defines confidence as: A FEELING or CONSCIOUSNESS of one's powers.
So often, powerful as we are, we are kept separate from feeling our own powerful nature and the expanse of our own capabilities.

Prenatal Massage, A Vital Part Of Your Pregnancy Plan
The Benefits of Massage During Pregnancy
The benefits of Prenatal Massage are achieved simply and pleasantly, yet they are significant, profound and far-reaching.
As a licensed massage therapist, specializing in prenatal, I would be happy to discuss your pregnancy with you and to schedule your prenatal massage(s).
Jody Caravaglia (718) 624-5489
- Therapeutic Massage has the ability to relieve aches and pains in a natural and safe way without the use of medications. Especially good for the pregnant mom and her fetus.
- Massage assists in promoting movement of the blood and lymph fluids. For the pregnant mother the benefits are many: assisting the heart with its increased circulation workload, assisting in venous blood return especially from legs, helping deliver oxygen, via blood flow to nourish mother’s muscles, helping to delivery metabolic waste products in the blood to the lungs and kidneys where they can be eliminated. Helps reduce water swelling (edema) in the legs by manually increasing lymph circulation. As a result, decreases fatigue.
- Promotes a healthy immune system.
- Massage helps to ease pressure and allievate stress on the weight bearing joints: hips, pelvis, knees, ankles, and foot joints. Massage soothes soreness and fatigue in all the muscles of the pregnant body, and specifically to the muscles associated with supporting the extra weight of the baby, and muscles effected by the growing shape and gravitational pulls on the mother’s changing form. Massage can relieve any pressure that impinges on any nerves such as the Sciatic Nerve. Massage can address lower back strain. Click READ MORE to continue reading. I especially love #7.........

In Praise of The Uterus
"The uterus is balanced, or in a manner floats, in its normal position in the pelvic cavity in a state of equilibrium. Under natural conditions when this state of equilibrium is disturbed it is quickly and readily regained as soon as the disturbing agency has ceased to operate. The uterus is endowed with a greater degree of mobility than any other internal organ in the body. Its position is normally altered by every respiratory act, descending with inspiration and rising with expiration. It is pushed backward as the bladderfills and forward by a full rectum and upward when both these organs are filled. Its position is changed by change of posture. It may be greatly displaced in a bimanual examination only to immediately return to its normal position which may vary considerably within certain limits. So to constitute a displacement the condition must be continuous and more or less fixed. Should the uterus become fixed or immobilized in what is called its "normal position" such a condition would be pathological."
I do quite a bit of research and studying by following links on the internet. This excerpt is from a medical article on uterus displacement and can be read in full by clicking on this LINK. I found the wording so eloquent......almost poetic.....the way the author evokes the principle of the uterus as a cloud floating on a hammock. Amazing!......Jody
